Construction & Renovation

This direction mainly consisted of 3 projects: Construction of Row--houses (Duplexes); Home 2. Completion of Half -Builds Project (CHP); 3. Rehabilitation/Renovation Project (HRRP);
These projects are implemented both in partnership with different institutions and organizations such as Universities, MFIs, Government and through traditional HFHT housing module.

Row-houses (Duplex) Project:

The majority of the new houses completed by Habitat in Tajikistan refers to Khujand affiliate. As a result of close relationship established during the last 5-6 years with Local Government of Khujand city (in the north of Tajikistan), HFHT in Khujand received a plot of land donated from government enough to build more than 238 new houses.
The affiliate had received applications from 780 families in need out of which 408 follow to Habitat partner family selection criteria. These families live with limited income in substandard living conditions and cannot break this cycle of poverty on their own.

New houses that HFHT builds in partnership with families are raw houses - duplexes that are built from cement, stone, wood, fire bricks, and galvanized iron sheets. All the houses are made earthquake resistant via seismic belts and steel-concrete reinforcement. Duplexes are comparatively cost-effective to traditional houses - for around $1000USD cheaper. So far the affiliate has built six duplexes for 12 families in this plot of land. There are 72 families in desperate need identified among selected 238 who will be supported by HFHT to complete their new houses in above mentioned plot of land within the next 3 years.

Completion of Half-builds Project (CHP):

In order to support very low income families in rural and remote areas, HFH Tajikistan implements project designed to strengthen the capacity of partner families to complete their half-built homes.
The Asht District of Soghd region, bordering with Uzbekistan, is one of the poorest areas in the north Tajikistan. Around 30% of the households in Asht district, (i.e.700 homes) have 2-3 families living under one roof. Yet almost 50 % of the young families living in overcrowded, substandard housing have plots of land with unfinished homes given to them during Soviet times; they just do not have enough income/recourses to complete them.
Through this project HFH Tajikistan has already supported around 50 low-income families by providing construction materials needed for the completion of their half-built houses through affordable loans as well as provided construction expertise to help families with construction. Each family invested manual labour (sweat equity) to complete their unfinished homes. The completion cost of $1066 USD will be repaid by families in low monthly installments of $29 over a period of 3 years. These repayments will go into Habitat for Humanity’s Revolving Fund, which will be used to build more houses in the area.
HFHT will continue collaboration with Asht local government and communities to expand and scale up the project to help low-income families to improve their living conditions.

Home Rehabilitation/ Renovation Projects (HRRP):

Half built and abandoned apartment buildings are scattered all across the country reminding about the “full” stop of huge construction industry of soviet era after the collapse in early 90th and disability of current government even to complete what has already been started 20 years ago.
HFHT has implemented series of partnership projects with local government of Khujand and Ckalovsk cities, Khujand State University, INGO “Red Cross” and “Vostokredmet” association to complete and renovate 4 of these apartment blocks inhabiting and improving living condition of 313 families.
The most considerable apartment rehabilitation project implemented by HFHT is the rehabilitation of a 9 store 52 apartment building (Partnership Project with Khujand State University).

As it was posed above there are numbers of unfinished apartment buildings exist throughout the country. Currently HFHT has official letters/requests for partnership from the local governments and organizations of Kairakkum, Nurek, Istaravshan and Khujand cities to partner in renovation and completion of unfinished and abandoned buildings in respective locations.
